You want a tragic story? Welcome to Greil’s life.
Known as Sir Gawain of the Four Riders, the “Divine Knight,” the best swordsman of his generation. His fiancee got a hold of Lehran’s Medallion for safe keeping, and they disappeared to Gallia. Started a family together. Changed his name.
But one day he touched the medallion, went berserk, and ultimately killed his wife when she tried to stop him from killing everyone. He hired an independent agent to kill him in case it happened again. Severed his arm so he couldn’t again wield a sword.
And then started Tellius’s most kickass mercenary company.
He’s a father figure to everyone in that company. Probably got Shinon out of trouble. Hired Oscar & Boyd when they were orphaned. He was a tough commander, but there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his company. He constantly reminded them that they were a family, and you certainly get a sense of that even after he dies.
He’s very secretive about his past; he doesn’t want to burden his children with his problems. Even as he’s dying, he instructs Ike to forget about it all. Go to Gallia, live in peace. He doesn’t want that for his children, though I’m sure he knew Ike wouldn’t listen. He’s a “stubborn pup,” after all.
And you can’t deny that he’s ridiculously handsome as well. Just putting that out there.
